One of the Most Scenic Drives in the World

This six-mile stretch of highway winds through the heart of the Yavapai Desert, threading past Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte, and some of the most iconic red rock landscapes on Earth. Sunrise, sunset, or blue-sky midday—there’s no wrong time to drive it.

Important hiking note:
If Cathedral Rock is on your list, parking at the trailhead is no longer allowed. You’ll need to park at the Sedona High School Park-and-Ride (995 Upper Red Rock Loop Rd) and take the free shuttle directly to the trailhead. Easy, efficient, and worth it.

Discovering Sedona's Wildlife

While Sedona is famous for its towering red rock formations and sweeping desert vistas, the high desert landscape is far from barren. It is home to a vibrant, interconnected ecosystem filled with a fascinating variety of unique animals. From the shaded canyon floors of Oak Creek to the sun-baked sandstone ridges, these creatures have spent millennia adapting to the dramatic shifts in desert temperature and terrain.

Look closely among the prickly pears and manzanita bushes, and you'll find a world teeming with life—where masterfully camouflaged predators, resilient foraging herds, and soaring raptors all play a vital role in the spirit of the American Southwest.

Every rust-colored cliffside, sharp ridge, and tilted stone band holds a precise record of an era long forgotten.

As you move through this landscape, you are traveling through time. The massive, stacked layers beneath your feet reveal a shifting prehistoric world, tracking Sedona's transition from a dynamic, ancient river floodplain into a vast, wind-swept desert paradise. This guide is your invitation to look closer at the stone, decode the rich variations in color, and discover how a continuous battle between resilient rock and relentless weather carved out the iconic, dramatic skyline we see today.
